How to become a commercial pilot in India: step by step roadmap

Rohan Kulkarni Posted 1 month ago 2.6K views

A Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) is issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This is the usual path, but always confirm the current rules on the DGCA website.

  • Complete Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Get a DGCA Class 1 medical certificate before you spend money on training.
  • Join a DGCA approved flying training organisation and obtain a Student Pilot Licence.
  • Pass the DGCA ground exams and complete the required flying hours for the CPL.
  • Meet the radio telephony and language proficiency requirements.
  • After the CPL, airlines usually ask for a type rating on the aircraft they fly.

Training is expensive, so compare academies, get all costs in writing and plan your finances before you start.

Physics and Mathematics are generally needed. If you did not study them, an equivalent route such as the National Institute of Open Schooling is accepted in some cases. Check the current DGCA rule before planning.
